This high altitude strenuous trek takes to the base of Zemu glacier, the largest glacier in the Himalaya range. The trail follows the path of mountaineering pioneers of early nineteen hundred who tried to scale the peaks of Mt. Kanchenzonga, Nepal peak, Tent peak etc. The trail offers scenic views of Mt. Simvo and Mt. Sinolchu. The vegetation includes the shrubs of rhododendrons. The village of Lachen is an interesting place to observe the lifestyle and the culture of high altitude Himalayan people.
Arrival at Bagdogra Airport, drive to Gangtok through the narrow hilly roads, passing the Teesta river numerous times along the way. In between we stop at Rangpo, the border between the state of West Bengal and Sikkim, to obtain the inner line permit.

Pick up at Bhadrapur airport, Nepal and transfer to Kakharvitta which is approximately 35 minutes by vehicle, a small town which shares international border with India.

After breakfast, we drive for an hour to Rumtek monastery which was founded in mid-1700s by the 12th Karmapa of the Kagyu sect and rebuilt again in the 1960s by his 16th reincarnation. It is the main seat-in-exile of the Kagyu sect outside Tibet. Drive back to Gangtok and visit Dro-Dul chorten, a stupa built in 1945 by the head of the Ningma order. Afternoon, visit the Handloom & Handicraft centre followed by local market exploration.

Transfer to Lachen through the North Sikkim Highway, a small town in North Sikkim stands on a grassy and bushy flat land separated by deep gorges of river Lachen-Chu from where rises the pine clad mountains with their snowy peaks and black cliffs. The village holds nearly 250 houses.
We are obliged to pass through local governing system known as Zumsa headed by a person known as Pipon for the arrangement for porter loads. Army liaison officer is arranged here.
Transfer to Zema for about 20mins, our trek starts from here walking along by the side of the Zema river, the route here is quite steep with small boulders along the trail, small landslides have to be crossed by temporarily made log bridges in Thalem. Today we will be walking mostly through the dense rhododendron forest and uneven terrains. Reaching at campsite one can still go for the short excursion around the region and discover it’s natural beauty.
Today we will be walking into the dense rhododendron forest giving us an opportunity to witness the different species / color of rhododendron and slowly gaining steepness as one approaches the campsite.
Today the trail passes through the dense forest and after about 3hrs walk we will reach a point from where one can enjoy the demanding views of the Zema Glacier. After about 2-3hrs walk from here onwards we finally reach our campsite.
From here onwards the vegetation is fully alpine and the trail follows steeply along the hillside and goes down towards the Zema river. Once we crossed the river we reach a small valley knowan a Sona Camp further up the trails goes through the small meadows along the river camp. We get the first glimpse of one of world’s most beautiful mountain i.e Mt. Sinolchu along with Mt. Simvo, Kanchenjunga and Tent Peak. Blue sheep can be spotted during the day.
The trail goes along the river among meadows and Alpine flowers & vegetation. The mountain view is constantly by your side as you walk through Marco Polo camp and further onto Green Lake. The lake here is small and dried up in the past year. On the one side we have the Zema Glacier with meadows and small stream flowing in-between whereas on the other side we have rocky hill sides. Majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga, Tent Peak, Nepal Peak, Simvo and Mt Sinolchu.
After so much of tiring and exhilarating ascends and descends, today you will be spending the entire day relaxing and enjoying the magnificent beauty of the nature beside the Green Lake.
